Timescapes

Transforming the walls of the Old Gaol into a living archive — a projection work inspired by the six seasons of the Nyoongar year.

Projection mapped animation on the walls of the Old Gaol at WA Museum.

At the WA Museum Boola Bardip’s Old Gaol site, Timescapes transforms the building’s walls into a living archive. The work draws on the Museum’s vast collection to create a poetic journey through Western Australia’s ecological and cultural history.

Inspired by the six seasons of the Nyoongar year, the work weaves together narratives that stretch from deep archaeological time and traditional Aboriginal knowledge through to colonial history and contemporary art.

The Collaboration

This project was a kaleidoscopic look at Western Australia’s complex social and ecological past. We assembled a remarkable creative team to realise this vision, including Chris Edser as Animation Director, Sari Braithwaite as Archival Consultant, and Orkheomai (Brendan Woithe) as Composer.

Together, we aimed to create a work that feels both grounded and dreamlike, using the texture of the gaol walls as a canvas for storytelling.
