Invisible Orchestra
An immersive sound installation where the audience becomes the conductor. Using sound-based AR, visitors navigate an invisible solar system of music.
Invisible Orchestra was an experimental sound installation created in collaboration with Google Creative Lab and the Australian Chamber Orchestra. It used ‘Sounds-in-Space,’ a unique sound-based AR technology, to create an invisible audio layer over the real world.
The Experience
Sounds were inaudible until the user – holding their device and wearing headphones – walked into specific physical zones where the audio was triggered by their location. We designed an abstract space inspired by the solar system, where each instrument or musical section orbited a central point.
With their vision partly obscured, audiences experienced the attracting and repelling forces of space through original soundscapes composed by Richard Tognetti and Joseph Nizeti. By moving through the room, visitors effectively “mixed” the orchestra in real-time, creating their own unique path through the music.
